In this lesson, our original character Nova the owl explores the history and science behind the 5th of November. Through a beautifully crafted narrative text, pupils will investigate the sensory details of fireworks and the historical context of the Gunpowder Plot. This English bonfire night comprehension year 2 greater depth activity is perfectly aligned with the UK National Curriculum requirements for reading, specifically focusing on answering questions, making inferences on the basis of what is being said and done, and predicting what might happen next.
Teachers can use this resource as a guided reading session, a challenging homework task, or a stimulus for creative writing. The pack includes a high-quality passage followed by six to eight rigorous questions. These questions require pupils to justify their answers using evidence from the text, compare and contrast the sights and sounds of the night, and explain why certain safety precautions are essential. By incorporating higher-order thinking tasks, such as What might happen if the weather turned stormy? or Explain why we celebrate this historical event, pupils are encouraged to develop their critical thinking skills and express their ideas with clarity and precision.
